Komodo Expedition

About This Tour

The Komodo Expedition is Wanderlink's signature twelve-day journey through the beating heart of eastern Indonesia — a trip that trades a single destination for an entire arc of adventure. It begins on the sun-drenched shores of Bali, climbs into the volcanic highlands of Flores, and ends among the prehistoric islands of Komodo National Park, where legendary dragons still rule the savannah and manta rays glide through some of the richest waters on earth. This is a trip built for travelers who want it all: beach time and mountain treks, ancient culture and open ocean, sunrise crater lakes and sunset harbors. Along the way you'll walk through living traditional villages, watch a centuries-old spirit distilled by hand, swim beside marine giants, and track the world's largest lizard across its only home on the planet — all woven together by comfortable overland transfers, hand-picked local guides, and Wanderlink's on-the-ground support at every turn. 12 days, 8 islands, one unforgettable story. This is Indonesia at its wildest and most captivating.

Itinerary

Welcome to Bali picture 1 Welcome to Bali picture 2

The adventure kicks off the moment your wheels touch the tarmac. Stepping out of Ngurah Rai International Airport, you'll be met by your Wanderlink guide and whisked away by private vehicle to Kuta Beach — the buzzing, sun-soaked gateway to twelve days that are about to take you from tropical shoreline to dragon-guarded islands. Consider tonight your warm-up lap. Drop your bags, kick off your shoes, and let Kuta's legendary stretch of sand pull you in for sunset. Grab a cold Bintang at a beachfront warung, watch the surfers catch last light, and let the buzz of what's ahead start to sink in. Tomorrow the real journey begins — tonight, just enjoy the ride.

Consider this your last easy day before things get wild — make it count. Kuta is playground territory: a full menu of surf, spa, and street-food adventures sits right outside your hotel door, and today the itinerary is whatever you decide it to be. Paddle out for a beginner surf lesson and try to stand up on Kuta's famously forgiving waves, hunt down the best nasi goreng on the strip, or hand the reins to your Wanderlink consultant for an optional add-on adventure. Prefer to simply horizontal yourself by the pool with a fresh coconut? Also a completely valid strategy. Either way — rest up, because Flores is calling.

Time to trade the beach for the wild side. Board your flight to Ende on the island of Flores and press your face to the window — this short hop delivers a front-row seat over a jagged spine of volcanoes, a first glimpse of the raw, untamed terrain you're about to dive into. Touch down and swap the plane for a 4x4, climbing switchback roads up into the misty Kelimutu highlands as the air cools and the jungle thickens around you. Check in, fuel up on dinner, and get to bed early — you've got a date with sunrise at one of Indonesia's most jaw-dropping natural wonders, and it starts before dawn.

Alarm before sunrise, headlamp on, boots laced — this is the good stuff. A short but brisk trek carries you up to the crater rim of Kelimutu, where three volcanic lakes sit side by side, each glowing a different, otherworldly color that shifts with the region's mineral chemistry. Watching the sun crack over the horizon and set these lakes ablaze in shifting hues is one of those bucket-list moments that photos never quite capture. With the adrenaline of sunrise still buzzing, refuel with breakfast before heading down to Blue Stone Beach (Pantai Batu Biru), where the shoreline is carpeted in smooth, sea-polished stones in shades of brilliant blue — an oddly hypnotic place to wander barefoot. From there, hit the road for Bajawa, rolling into the highland town by late afternoon.

Today is a deep dive into Ngada culture, and it starts with a view worth earning: Wolobobo, a hilltop lookout unrolling a patchwork of volcanoes and rice terraces beneath you — the perfect spot to get your bearings before heading into the villages below. In Luba and Bena villages, step into living tradition — clusters of steep thatched-roof houses ringed around ancient megalithic stone shrines, still central to Ngada ceremonial life today. This isn't a recreation; it's the real, breathing thing, and the welcome is as warm as the volcanic soil underfoot. Cap the day at Soa's natural hot spring, where jungle-fed mineral water offers the perfect excuse to soak the trekking soreness right out of your legs.

Traditional Arak Distillation & Ruteng picture 1 Traditional Arak Distillation & Ruteng picture 2 Traditional Arak Distillation & Ruteng picture 3 Traditional Arak Distillation & Ruteng picture 4

First stop today: Aimere, a coastal village with a serious reputation for one thing — arak, the fiery palm spirit that's been distilled here for generations. Watch the full process unfold, from tapping towering lontar palms to the slow, wood-fired alchemy that turns sap into spirit, and don't be shy about a taste test if you're feeling bold. From there, the road climbs again toward Ruteng, a cool, coffee-scented highland town tucked among the clouds. It's a lazier stretch of driving today, so sit back, watch Flores unfurl outside the window, and settle in for a relaxed evening once you arrive.

Ruteng Market, Cancar Rice Fields & Labuan Bajo picture 1 Ruteng Market, Cancar Rice Fields & Labuan Bajo picture 2

Dive into local life at Ruteng's traditional market — a sensory overload of mountain coffee, fresh produce, hand-woven textiles, and the daily rhythm of Manggarai life, and prime hunting ground for your camera. A short drive away, Cancar delivers one of Flores' most photogenic surprises: rice paddies laid out in giant spider-web rings, radiating from a central point according to age-old land-division custom. From this final viewpoint, it's a descending, scenery-packed drive to the coast, timed perfectly to roll into Labuan Bajo just as the sky ignites over the harbor — the front door to tomorrow's big adventure.

This is the day you booked the trip for. Cast off from Labuan Bajo harbor at first light and set sail into Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage wonderland and one of the wildest marine playgrounds on the planet. First up: Padar Island, where a punchy trek to the ridge line rewards you with one of the most iconic views in Indonesia — three curling bays, each a different shade of sand, stretched out below your feet. Then it's game on for the main event: a guided trek across Komodo Island in search of the Komodo dragon, the largest lizard alive on Earth, prowling a landscape of golden savannah and wild horses. The rest of the day is pure island-hopping bliss — sink your toes into the soft coral sand of Pink Beach, wade the ever-shifting sandbar at Taka Makassar, and slip into the water at Manta Point for a shot at swimming alongside graceful reef manta rays. Round it out with more snorkeling over vivid coral gardens at Kenawa Island and Kelor Island before cruising back into Labuan Bajo as the sun sets on an unforgettable day.

Fly Back to Bali, Onward to Ubud picture 1

After the high-octane thrills of Komodo, it's time to shift gears. Fly back to Bali and head straight for Ubud, trading dragon-island wilderness for a world of lush rice terraces, hidden ravines, and slow, cultural rhythm. The rest of the day is yours to unwind — wander the art markets, browse gallery after gallery of local craftsmanship, or simply let the cooler mountain air and the sound of running water reset your senses before dinner.

Another free day, another chance to choose your own adventure. Feeling active? Add on a white-water rafting run through jungle gorges on the Ayung River, pedal a cycling tour past rice terraces and village life, chase panoramic views on an early-morning Mount Batur sunrise jeep tour, or explore some of Bali's most sacred temples on a guided temple tour. Or take the slower road — stroll through Ubud's Monkey Forest, wander a rice terrace at your own pace, or simply claim a spot by the pool. After Komodo, you've earned the right to pick your own pace today.

Balinese Cooking Class & Farewell Dinner picture 1 Balinese Cooking Class & Farewell Dinner picture 2

Roll up your sleeves for a hands-on Balinese cooking class, kicking off with a trip to a local market to hand-pick fresh ingredients before diving into the kitchen to cook up a full traditional feast under expert guidance — equal parts culinary lesson and genuine fun. Tonight, the whole group comes together for a farewell dinner to toast an incredible journey — from Bali's beaches to Flores' highlands, dragon encounters on Komodo, and everything wild and wonderful in between.
